Safety Certificates

All cars, motorcycles, trailers with an ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass) between 750kg and 4,500kg, and any other vehicles up to 4,500kg GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) require a safety certificate. If you are unfamiliar with these terms, ATM refers to the total weight of the loaded trailer, while GVM refers to the maximum weight the vehicle is designed to carry including passengers and cargo. These certificates need to be renewed every 12 months for taxis, limousines, and ride-share vehicles.

Certificates Of Inspection

A Certificate of Inspection (aka COI) is a periodic or programmed inspection designed to check minimum vehicle safety standards in heavy vehicles, licensed tow trucks, buses, taxis, limousines and booked hire vehicles. In order to maintain registration of their vehicle, owners of a Certified Of Inspection (COI) must ensure that the COI is up-to-date. It is beneficial to book an inspection before the expiration date, so that the vehicle can be tested for any deficiencies before needing to renew its registration.

For a Certificate of Inspection (COI), your vehicle type will determine which one of two places to go to - either a Transport and Main Roads-approved inspection station or a Transport and Main Roads inspection centre. Visit the Qld government website for more information.

Prior to presenting the vehicle for a Safety Certificate Inspection or a commercial or heavy vehicle for a Certificate of Inspection, it is highly recommended that it be inspected for any deficiencies and have the necessary fixes performed to avoid the requirement of a follow-up examination.
